You've Probably Seen a Hongqi Before... Without Realizing It
The name Hongqi may be unfamiliar to many Nepali audiences, but there is a good chance you have already seen one.
If you follow international news, state visits, global summits, or diplomatic events, Hongqi's distinctive luxury sedans have often appeared in official motorcades and government convoys.
The brand has long been associated with China's leadership, including appearances during events involving President Xi Jinping, visiting foreign dignitaries, and major national ceremonies.

Beyond China, Hongqi has also expanded into international markets, particularly across the Middle East, where its premium sedans and electric SUVs have gained visibility among luxury vehicle buyers. The brand is now growing its presence across Asia and Europe, bringing a distinctly Chinese interpretation of luxury mobility to global markets.
Now, the same brand that has represented prestige and authority for decades is preparing to make its official entry into Nepal.
Hongqi will be unveiled at the NAIMA Nepal Mobility Expo 2026, scheduled from August 11 to 16 at Bhrikuti Mandap, Kathmandu, marking the arrival of one of China's most prestigious automotive marques in Nepal's rapidly expanding electric vehicle market.
What is Hongqi? China's Answer to Luxury Mobility
Hongqi, which translates to "Red Flag" in Chinese, is the luxury division of FAW Group (First Automobile Works), one of China's oldest and largest automobile manufacturers.
While many Chinese automotive brands have gained global recognition through affordable vehicles, technology, and mass-market appeal, Hongqi was created with a different purpose. From its beginning, the brand focused on luxury, craftsmanship, and prestige, becoming a symbol of China's automotive ambition.

Often described as China's equivalent of traditional European luxury brands, Hongqi has built its reputation through premium sedans, executive vehicles, and advanced electric SUVs.
Today, the brand represents a combination of heritage and modern technology, blending nearly seven decades of automotive history with the future of electric mobility.
A Legacy Built Over Nearly Seven Decades
Hongqi's story began in 1958, when FAW produced the first Hongqi luxury sedan. It became China's first domestically developed premium automobile brand and quickly gained significance beyond transportation, representing national achievement and technological progress.
In 1960, Hongqi made its international debut at the Leipzig Trade Fair and the Geneva Motor Show, introducing Chinese automotive engineering to global audiences.
During the following decades, particularly from the 1970s through the 1990s, Hongqi became closely associated with China's official events. Its luxury sedans were used as state vehicles for national ceremonies, diplomatic occasions, and visits by foreign leaders, establishing its reputation as a symbol of prestige and authority.

The brand entered a new era after 2018, when FAW introduced a global expansion strategy focused on premium design, electrification, and international markets. The introduction of models such as the Hongqi E-HS9 marked a major turning point, showcasing China's ability to develop luxury electric vehicles for global buyers.

Today, Hongqi continues expanding across Asia and Europe, combining its historic identity with advanced electric powertrains, intelligent driving technology, and modern luxury.
A Growing Family of Luxury Vehicles
Hongqi's lineup is divided into four product series: L, S, H, and Q.
The L Series represents the brand's flagship luxury vehicles, the S Series focuses on sportier coupe-style models, the H Series covers its mainstream luxury sedans and SUVs, while the Q Series is aimed at premium commercial and travel vehicles.

As part of its global expansion, Hongqi plans to introduce 21 new models across these four series in the coming years, strengthening its position as a complete luxury automotive brand.
Hongqi's First Chapter in Nepal
Hongqi's arrival in Nepal will be managed by Advanced Automobile Pvt. Ltd., the company previously responsible for Renault vehicles in Nepal.
Following the signing of its official dealership agreement, the distributor has already started importing the first batch of Hongqi vehicles ahead of their public debut. The brand is expected to introduce two electric SUVs during its initial launch in Nepal — the Hongqi E-HS4 and the flagship Hongqi E-HS9.

Although final specifications and pricing for the Nepali market are yet to be announced, industry sources suggest that the models could be positioned between Rs 60 lakh and Rs 65 lakh, placing Hongqi in Nepal's premium electric SUV segment.
The arrival of Hongqi reflects the changing nature of Nepal's EV market. Buyers are no longer looking only for affordable electric mobility solutions but are increasingly exploring premium vehicles offering luxury, performance, and advanced technology.
Hongqi E-HS9: The Flagship Luxury Electric SUV
At the centre of Hongqi's global lineup is the E-HS9, a full-size luxury electric SUV designed to compete with premium electric SUVs from established global brands.
The E-HS9 makes a strong first impression with its imposing dimensions. It measures 5,209 mm in length, 2,010 mm in width, and 1,731 mm in height, while offering a substantial 3,110 mm wheelbase that creates a spacious and executive-focused cabin.

Internationally, the SUV is available with battery options ranging from 84 kWh to 120 kWh, offering a WLTP-certified driving range of up to 515 km to 548 km, depending on the variant. Power comes from a dual-motor electric all-wheel-drive system, enabling the large luxury SUV to accelerate from 0–100 km/h in around 5.5 seconds.
The E-HS9 is available globally with an executive-style six-seat configuration (2+2+2), focusing on passenger comfort and premium travel. Its combination of large dimensions, electric performance, and luxury-focused design positions it as the flagship representation of Hongqi's global ambitions.
A Luxury Lounge on Wheels
The cabin of the E-HS9 reflects Hongqi's approach to premium mobility. Designed to compete with established luxury SUVs, the interior combines advanced technology with high-quality materials and executive comfort.
Depending on the variant, the SUV features Nappa leather upholstery, Alcantara finishes, multiple digital displays, and a premium cabin layout designed around both driver and passenger experience.

Luxury features include ventilated and massage seats, quad-zone climate control, a premium Bose audio system with up to 16 speakers, ambient lighting, advanced connectivity features, and a wide range of driver assistance technologies.
Selected versions also feature intelligent air suspension and advanced driving systems, further enhancing the comfort and refinement expected from a flagship luxury SUV.
A New Era for Nepal's Premium EV Segment
Nepal's electric vehicle market has transformed significantly in recent years. What started with practical and affordable electric cars has gradually expanded into premium segments, with buyers now gaining access to vehicles offering higher levels of technology, comfort, and performance.
Hongqi enters Nepal with a different identity from many of the Chinese brands already present in the market. Its appeal is not based only on electric technology or pricing but also on heritage, exclusivity, and a history deeply connected with China's automotive development.
Hongqi's arrival adds a new level of luxury and prestige to Nepal's EV market. Making its debut at the NAIMA Nepal Mobility Expo 2026, the brand marks another milestone in Nepal's transition towards a more diverse electric mobility future.
